Co-Captains Log – August 15, 2016. Wareham to Block Island

Air Temp:  25-30c

Water Temp:  87.9f

Wind 7kn NW

Departed Wareham, Massachusetts at 9:08am

This morning when I got up, Mini-Wheat and I went for a walk.  Then, after she wouldn’t go further then 100 feet from the boat, I put her back onboard and went into the village to get some coffee.

At 8:30am Kylie’s friend’s family came to the dock to drop her off.  She had an amazing time with them last night.

We are so thankful for their having her.  Doug gave some tours of the boat, then at 9:08 we untied and were on our way to Block Island, Rhode Island.

From what we have read, Block Island is a very popular cruising ground.  The New Harbor Moorings are normally filled by 10am but later in the day the Harbour master will begin filling the private moorings too.  So we hope we will be able to get a mooring, otherwise, we will anchor.  (Some of the things I have read state anchoring in not the best here due to poor holding and dragging.) This morning, after some boat work. Wifi searching and dog walking, we all headed to the Glass Museum for a 9:30am opening.

It was already hot out So we stopped for iced coffees enroute.

Walking to the Glass Museum

The Museum was very well curated, with some interactive exhibits, a glass blowing demo and a wide assortment of glassware. To keep the kids engaged, they have a scavenger hunt which ends with a prize (glass marbles). I love this, as it had the kids looking at all the interesting glass. Co-Captains Log – August 11, 2016. South Bristol (Christmas Cove) to Biddeford

Air Temp: 19.5c
Water Temp: 65.4f
Wind: calm
Foggy

We departed Christmas Cove at 6 am after Mini-Wheat and I took the kayak to shore.

At 12:15 we stopped at Grand Beach and anchored in about 8 ft of water, about 100 feet from shore. The beach stretched miles and was beautiful. We all paddled to shore for the afternoon and enjoyed the surf, sun and sand.

Co-Captains Log – August 10, 2016. South Brooksville to Christmas Cove

Air Temp: 17.2c
WaterTemp: 65.4f
Wind: calm
Partly Cloudy

We departed our mooring at 6:04am with our first stop planned for Port Clyde, ME.

Port Clyde reportedly has a well stocked general store with a private dock we can tie to. We need groceries (the kids feel we are starving them) and we haven’t had easy access to a grocery store since Shelburne, NS.

The general store in Port Clyde wasn’t as fully stocked as I had hoped and it was expensive. Therefore we grabbed a few things for tonight and then looked around the town for a bit. It’s very touristy here and there are apparently a lot of artists in the area.

Sorry, we forgot to take pictures of the town, I think because it was starting to rain, but here are some of a car Spencer and Doug liked. Continue reading “Co-Captains Log – August 10, 2016. South Brooksville to Christmas Cove”

Co-Captains Log – August 9, 2016. Bar Harbor to South Brooksville

Air Temp: 11c
WaterTemp: 67.2f
Wind: 0
Clear

Departed Bar Harbour at 6:55am

We untied and were on our way back through the crab pot maze! The docks we were tied to last night were the noisiest, clangy, bangy docks I’ve ever been on. Overall, I’d never stay here again. It just didn’t seem worth the dollars, but Bar Harbor was nice and I’m glad we stopped to check it out.

Co-Captains Log – August 8, 2016. Seal Cove, NB to Bar Harbor, Maine, USA

Air Temp: 15c
Water Temp: 60.9f
Wind: 4 km NW
Clear
Departed Seal Cove at 3:38am

This morning it was still dark out when we untied from the fishing boat we were rafted to. We wanted the tidal currents in our favour, therefore we wanted to leave just after high tide so we could run with the current all the way out. So…. 3am it is.

Initially I sat up on the bow to be lookout because we knew there were some fish farms that we needed to get past. But soon, Doug called me in and turned on the radar which was an easier, (more reliable) way to ensure we were not near anything. Continue reading “Co-Captains Log – August 8, 2016. Co-Captains Log – Aug 7, 2016. Westport, Brier Island, NS to Seal Cove, Grand Manan Island, NB

Water Temp: 59.7f
Wind: 11km W

Depart West Port at 8:10am
Tide: Low 9:15am, High 4:21pm

We’ve been using a book called ‘The Complete Cruising Guide Down East Circle Route’ by Capt. Cheryl Barr to get information about playing the currents on the St Lawrence and here around the Bay of Fundy. We also use it for information regarding potential ports along the way. Although the port info is not as detailed as the Ports books I am used to for the Trent Severn Waterway and Lake Ontario it has been very useful for this trip.
